Domain to IP Lookup
Find the IP addresses a domain points to: its A (IPv4) and AAAA (IPv6) records with TTLs, any CNAME chain in between, and the reverse DNS name of each address. Enter a domain such as example.com.

Common A record problems
The domain still points to the old server
The A record was not updated, was updated at a DNS provider that is not authoritative (check the NS records), or the old answer is still cached until its TTL runs out. Compare the IP shown here with your new server's address.
You see Cloudflare IPs, not your server
With Cloudflare's proxy turned on, the public answer is Cloudflare's addresses and your origin IP stays hidden. That is expected. To confirm the origin, check the record in the Cloudflare dashboard.
Root domain works, www does not (or the reverse)
example.com and www.example.com are separate names with separate records. Look up both: one is often missing or still points to the previous host.
Several A records, one of them stale
With more than one A record, clients pick among them, so a single dead address causes intermittent failures that are hard to reproduce. Remove any address that no longer serves the site.
A private IP address in public DNS
An A record such as 10.0.0.5 or 192.168.1.20 only works inside one network. Visitors outside it cannot connect. Use the server's public address, or a separate internal DNS zone for private names.
How to find a domain's IP address
- Enter the domain or hostname, for example example.com or www.example.com.
- Click Find IP.
- Read the A and AAAA addresses, the CNAME chain if there is one, and the reverse DNS name for each IP.
- Use the reverse DNS name to see who runs the address, for example a cloud provider or CDN.
What is an A record?
An A record maps a name to an IPv4 address such as 203.0.113.10. An AAAA record does the same for an IPv6 address. When a browser opens example.com, it asks DNS for these records and connects to the address it gets back.
A name can have several A records. Clients pick one, and many retry another if it fails, which spreads load and adds some redundancy. Large sites and CDNs often return different addresses to different visitors.
If the name is a CNAME, the resolver follows the alias first and returns the addresses of the final target. This tool shows that chain so you can see which platform actually serves the site.
Reverse DNS (a PTR record) goes the other way, from an IP back to a name. It often reveals the provider behind an address, for example a name ending in amazonaws.com or googleusercontent.com.
www.example.com. 300 IN CNAME example.netlify.app. example.netlify.app. 20 IN A 203.0.113.10 example.com. 3600 IN A 203.0.113.10 example.com. 3600 IN AAAA 2001:db8::10
When to use a domain to IP lookup
Moving a WordPress site to a new host
After updating the A record, confirm the domain resolves to the new server's IP before you cancel the old hosting plan.
Allowlisting a service in a firewall
Find the current address of an API or partner endpoint. If it sits behind a CDN or load balancer, expect it to change and allowlist by name where you can.
Checking whether a site is behind a CDN
See if the addresses belong to Cloudflare, AWS CloudFront or another CDN, or to the origin server directly.
Pointing a domain at a VPS
Confirm the A record on example.com and www both point to your DigitalOcean, Hetzner or Linode server before you request a certificate.
Check something else
- DNS LookupLook up A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS, CAA and SOA records for any domain, with TTLs, from public resolvers.
- CNAME CheckerCheck where a hostname's CNAME points, its TTL, the full chain and the final IP address.
- Reverse DNS LookupFind the PTR hostname for an IP address and check that it resolves back to the same IP.
- Website Down CheckerCheck if a website is down for everyone or just you, with status code, response time and final URL.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a domain have more than one IP address?
For load balancing and redundancy. Clients pick one of the addresses, and many retry another if it fails. CDNs also return different addresses depending on where the request comes from.
Why is the IP different from what I see locally?
Your computer or ISP may have cached an older answer, a hosts file entry may override it, or a CDN may return a different address to your network. This tool shows what public resolvers return.
What is the difference between A and AAAA records?
A records hold IPv4 addresses and AAAA records hold IPv6 addresses. A site can have both. Visitors with IPv6 usually try the AAAA address first, so both must reach a working server.
Can I find the real server IP behind Cloudflare?
Not from public DNS. With the proxy on, Cloudflare answers with its own addresses by design. Only the account owner can see the origin address in the Cloudflare dashboard.
Can several domains share one IP address?
Yes. Shared hosting, CDNs and most cloud platforms serve many domains from the same address and pick the site from the requested hostname.
Stop checking manually
An A record left pointing at a retired server fails silently until someone complains. TinyPing checks your site every 5 minutes and alerts you when:
- the domain stops resolving
- the site returns an error or times out
- an expired certificate breaks HTTPS
